Legacy Items

All magic items found in official 5e books or the SRD, which have not been updated here on this wiki, are considered "legacy items". As of this writing, there is no official system for determining market values of these items, nor how to craft them, so the rules below attempt to do just that.

Cost of Magic Items

All magic items have a level, which helps to determine price.

Determining Item Level

5e SRD items can be converted by consulting the following chart: TBD

For other items, use the following:

Item Effect Level Calculation Example

Copies a spell

Appropriate level for a wizard to cast the spell (i.e. level 5 for Fireball)

Wand of Magic Missile: level 1

Copies multiple spells

As "copies a spell" for highest-level spell +1 for each additional spell within 4 levels, +0.5/spell for all others

Lesser Staff of Fire (fireball, wall of fire, burning hands): level 6

Grants a numeric bonus to a single type of die roll (e.g. attack rolls with a magic sword, Con saves, Stealth checks)1

Notes:

  • 1: there is a special x0.5 cost modifier for numeric bonuses that are not applicable to combat.
